The Centre for Modern European Studies and Laying the Foundations: The League of Nations and International Law, 1919 (DFF) is delighted to invite everyone to a public panel debate on Sovereignty and Self-Determination at the Paris Peace Conference and Beyond with Professor Leonard V. Smith (Oberlin College, Ohio) and Dr. Volker Prott (Aston University, Birmingham).

The format will be that of two short lectures, followed by remarks and questions by the two discussants, Haakon A. Ikonomou (University of Copenhagen) and Jan Lemnitzer (University of Southern Denmark), and a Q&A.

The event will be followed by a reception. No registration needed

Professor Leonard V. Smith (Oberlin College, Ohio) is the author of Sovereignty at the Paris Peace Conference of 1919 (Oxford University Press, 2018), a formidable tour de force of the transformative settlement after the First World War, exploring how the Great Powers sought to create sovereignty over the international system in ways that sovereignty previously had not existed, with repercussions into the 21st century.

Dr. Volker Prott (Aston University, Birmingham) is the author of The Politics of Self-Determination. Remaking Territories and National Identities in Europe, 1917-1923 (Oxford University Press, 2016), an innovative and wide-ranging study of the politics and expertise that transformed the Wilsonian catch-all of ‘self-determination’ into realities on the ground, often with devastating effects.

Organized by the CEMES Research Group 'Rethinking European Integration' and the 'Laying the Foundations' project.
