Haakon Andreas Ikonomou

Associate Professor

My academic interests are international organizations, global disarmament governance, international bureaucracy and diplomacy, European integration, Scandinavian internationalism, digital history, oral history and biography.

I am a Gerda Henkel Fellow within the Special Programme "Security, Society, and the State”, working on the research project European Security in a Changing World: General disarmament between international organization & state sovereignty, 1890s-1930s.

Until July 2025, I am heading the DFF-funded collective project "Autonomy and Expertise in International Administrations, 1940s-1970s" (RP1).

Additionally, I am directing the digital history project Visualizing the League of Nations Secretariat - A Digital Research Tool, where I'm developing a digital visualization of the Secretariat's human composition over time. Together with a stellar team of historians, computer scientists and students, we are also developing a Research Guide for the United Nations Library & Archives Geneva.

Last semester (Spring 2022), I taught the course: "The League of Nations: International Organization, International Politics and Internationalism, 1850s-1950s". The course was structured around a research based teaching experiment, kindly funded by KU, entitled "Network-based analysis of the League of Nations Secretariat". (co-taught with Obaida Hanteer, Søndre Campus Datalab).

In the pipeline for 2022/23, are three publications:

- "Thanassis Aghnides, Ayrilios Spatharis and the Population Exchange", Ikonomou, H. A. & Kamouzis, D., in They All Made Peace – What is Peace? The 1923 Lausanne Treaty and the New Imperial Order. Conlin, J. & Ozavci, O. (red.). University of Chicago Press, 2023.

- The special issue Scandinavian Internationalist Diplomacy, co-edited with Andreas Hellenes (Chalmers), Carl Marklund (Södertörn) and Rasmus Sinding Søndergaard (DIIS), with Diplomatica: A journal of diplomacy and society (Brill, in review).

- The monograph The International Bureaucrat in the Twentieth Century - A Global Biography of Thanassis Aghnides (under contract).

I am Review and Online Media Editor of Diplomatica: A journal of diplomacy and society (Brill), co-founder and steering committee member of Global Biography Working Group (GloBio), and co-director of the "Europe and International Cooperation in the 20th Century" (EIC) research group at the Centre for Modern European Studies (CEMES).
